Meet the LMC Safety Superheroes!

At Limberg Mining Company, safety is not just a priority – it’s a fundamental part of how we operate. To reinforce this culture, Safety Manager Liezel Bekker launched a dynamic four-month safety campaign that introduced two comic book-style safety champions: Captain Secure and Captain Safeguard.

Why Superheroes?

Everyone loves a superhero! With pop culture filled with strong, fearless protectors, we wanted to bring that same energy and engagement to our workforce.

By creating bold, visually striking characters, we made critical safety messages more accessible, memorable, and impactful.

An Ongoing Safety Journey

Month 1: Attention to Detail & Emergency Preparedness

Captain Safeguard reinforced that small details prevent major accidents, encouraging employees to identify risks and take responsibility for safety.

Month 2: TMM and Man-Machine Interaction

Captain Secure taught workers the importance of maintaining safe distances, proper machine operation, and clear communication between operators and workers.

Month 3: Fatigue and Road Safety

Both captains reminded everyone that fatigue is a silent but deadly risk, impacting judgment and reaction times, especially for those working long shifts or driving.

Employee Feedback

Thabo M, Heavy Equipment Operator:
“The superhero campaign really caught my attention. Seeing Captain Secure break down machine safety made me think differently about operating equipment. It was fun, but also very informative!”

Tapera D, Foreman:
“Fatigue is something we don’t always take seriously, but Captain Safeguard’s message hit home. Since the campaign, I’ve made a bigger effort to check in with my team and make sure they are well-rested before shifts.”

Liezel Bekker, Safety Manager:
“This campaign took workplace safety to another level. It wasn’t just about rules – it was about making safety real, engaging, and actionable. Employees connected with the messages, and that’s what will drive lasting change at LMC.”

What’s Next?

Given the campaign’s success, the company has launched a new series of posters focusing on:

  • Lock-out procedures
  • The importance of a buddy system – keeping an eye out for one’s fellow colleagues in the workplace

Stay safe. Stay alert. Be a safety hero!
