When did you join ChromTech.
In 2015, I began working at ChromTech and contributed to a variety of projects. Years earlier, while working at a general mining supply company, I developed an interest in the safety environment.
What are some of the unique safety challenges present on a chrome mine?
The first challenge is that people don’t understand the importance of strict mine safety measures. It’s important that everyone returns home safely and without injury. The second challenge is compliance, as people perform repetitive tasks and fill out the same documentation. Compliance is an important aspect in mine safety.
What are the key safety protocols every employee must follow?
Section 22 of the MHSA mandates that employees are responsible for their own and co-workers’ safety. Employees can withdraw from unsafe conditions under Section 23. To ensure compliance, daily toolbox talks are held, safety inspections are conducted, and communication is maintained. When a job is stopped, the team is informed and advised on how to rectify the issue.
Can you discuss any recent safety initiatives or improvements?
I am responsible for ensuring all procedures at Limberg Mine are in place and employees are trained. We are reviewing and updating the SHERQ system to reflect legal updates. The first safety initiative was “Back to Basics,” focusing on the first step to safety. The next initiative is “Safety Superstar,” aims at rewarding employees who work safely.
Looking ahead, what are the main areas of focus for safety and environmental management on the mine?
The primary focus will be on contractor management to ensure compliance with safety requirements and rules, and after completing the SHERQ system update, we will apply for ISO 9001 & ISO 45001 accreditation.
Is there a particular safety or environmental practice you would like to introduce?
Training all mine workers on safety is a priority and prerequisite. We encourage people not to undertake tasks unless safe and environmentally friendly measures are in place. We propose implementing appropriate systems, training, and awareness programmes to ensure everyone is on board to achieve the same common goal, minimising health, safety, and environmental risks.
